Part of the challenge in providing a rigorous college-preparatory curriculum is that so many students need more time to learn the skills to meet the standards. With small cohorts, academies often struggle to serve students who do not pass core courses. Having them repeat courses with younger students can be an unsuccessful strategy that discourages students and can disrupt the next cohort. Hear about a credit recovery model, now district policy, in which students can continue to work on a course until they achieve mastery or use a variety of other ways to recover credit during the regular school day.
